This world is full of different kinds of animals and creatures. No one really knows the exact number of the animals running around this planet, but we can be sure about one thing. There’s a lot of them. Horses, cats, dogs, tarantulas, birds… yes, everybody is aware of their existence. But what about the other ones?
Aye - aye, coatimundi or dragon slug? It doesn't sound familiar, does it? Then let’s take a look at some of the most interesting animals that have ever existed!
Mammals
Aye–aye
If you messed up your sleeping schedule, you might recognize yourself in Aye–aye, since some of them look like they haven’t slept in days. These primates are nocturnal, which means that they are mostly active at night. With their tails they can be up to 60 cm long and their lifespan is about 20 years in wild. Aye–ayes are also omnivores (they are able to eat plants as well as other animals). You can find these in Madagascar.
Coatimundi
Coatis can be also known as South American raccoons. They are diurnal, which means that they are active at day time. Their lifespan is around 18 years and can be around 30 cm long. Just like Aye–ayes, Coatis are omnivores. They can be found in South America, as you might know already.
Tasmanian tiger
Although Tasmanian tigers were pronounced in the last century, some people think that they might be still alive. They could be found in Tasmania (Australian state). You could also call them Tasmanian wolves due to their canid-like (dog-like) appearance. Tasmanian tigers were up to 130 cm long without their tail (which could be up to 65 cm long!) and could weight around 20 -30 kg.
Who lives under the water?
Glaucus atlanticus
These cute slugs are also known as blue angels, dragon slugs, blue dragons and many more nicknames! Just by looking at them, you might already know why they are called blue dragons. They are usually 5 cm long. Blue angels are able to eat the Portuguese man o' war, which is venomous and could kill a person holding it.
Red-lipped batfish
Red-lipped batfish might look like an angry old lady with some bad make-up, but these fish have naturally red lips. To this day, scientists aren't really sure why, but some say that it is to attract males. They have „legs“ that help hem walk on the seafloor. Red-lipped batfish are about 40 cm long.
Grimpoteuthis
These cute octopuses are also known as the Dumbo octopuses. Do you know why? Of course! They resemble Disne’s elephant Dumbo. Their lifespan is from 3-5 years and they live in cold depths of oceans. They are about 20 cm long.
Moths, moths, moths…
Venezuelan Poodle Moth
These huge and cute moths were discovered in 2009, somewhere in Venezuela. They have poodle in their name, because they are covered in white hair and resemble the dog. They are about 2,5 cm long. Just like any other moth, Venezuelan Poodle Moths are also attracted to various light sources.
Hummingbird Hawk-Moth
With their size of hummingbird, Hummingbird Hawk-Moths are pretty big (but not as big as the next moth!). Just like the bird, they feed on flowers in the exact same way. Not only can they be found in different places across this earth, you can also see them in our country! Each of their wings is around 2,5 cm long.
Attacus atlas
The wingspan of the Atlas moth his around 25 cm. You can find them in Asian forests. Unfortunately, their lifespan is much shorter than their wings. They only live up to 2 weeks.
